Eric Wolfram's Writing, Review of Barbet Schroeder

Our Lady of the Assassins

Directed by Barbet Schroeder

I Viewed Our Lady of the Assassins at the 44th San Francisco International Film Festival.

A self indulgent Colombian story, written from the heart of Fernando Vallejo, Our Lady of the Assassins is a fairly safe window into the dangerous streets of Medellin, Colombia -- the sprawling drug capitol of the world. The film is about a writer who is returning home. The brutal assassinations are made by local street gangs, which upset the romantic life of the writer hero. It's about his love and his prideful fantasy. In such a way, this film creates it's own drama, it's own eye candy, as the writer picks up pretty young boys who get taken from him again and again by street violence.
